Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Korean skincare so good?

Korean Skincare aims to heal and strengthen your natural skin barrier, giving your skin a healthy glow. To accomplish this, the skincare tends to be more gentle to nourish the skin, with natural ingredients often featured prominently in formulas. Additionally, Korean skincare really emphasises the importance of layering, this allows different product types to penetrate deeper into the skin, target different concerns, as well as effectively cleanse, prep the skin, and ensure better absorption of the product. The term β€œquick-fix” doesn’t exist in a Korean skincare routine – it’s all about consistency, dedication, and maintaining long-term skin health.Β

On the other hand, Western Skincare focuses on the overall appearance of the skin, with a preference towards more active chemical ingredients that deliver results. Layering skincare is less popular, with some products aiming to substitute quite a few steps at once for faster application. While innovation in Western skincare is present, Korea’s ultra-competitive skincare industry contains thousands of companies that are constantly competing with one another, resulting in greater innovation and affordability.Β

Does Korean skincare work for everyone?

Korean skincare works for most people, regardless of skin type, age, ethnicity, or experience level. The category is huge and diverse, with products formulated for every skin concern.

Why it tends to work well for so many people:

  1. K-beauty prioritises gentle hydration and barrier support over harsh actives, which suits sensitive and reactive skin
  2. Lightweight, layerable textures work for hot humid climates and cold dry ones equally
  3. Ingredient-led formulas (centella, heartleaf, snail mucin, mugwort) are well-tolerated across skin types
  4. Affordable price points mean you can experiment and build a routine without spending a fortune

Where K-beauty might not be the right fit on its own: severe cystic acne, rosacea flares, prescription-strength concerns. These often need medical support alongside (not instead of) skincare.

Our biggest advice for newcomers: start small. A simple 4-step routine of cleanser, hydrating toner, moisturiser, and SPF is plenty to begin with. Add one product at a time over weeks. If you're not sure where to start, email us at hello@skincupid.co.uk and we'll suggest a personalised starter routine.

Where to start with Korean Skincare?

If you are a K-Beauty beginner, we recommend starting with a simple 4-step routine that includes a cleanser, a serum, a moisturiser, and a sunscreen. We recommend starting small because if your skin is not used to many actives and layering, the sudden introduction of a 10-step routine that contains powerful products may overwhelm your skin, or cause it to break out. Slowly increasing the number of products in your routine will also make it easier for you to determine if a product is not suitable for your skin.Β

What are the 10 steps in Korean Skincare?

The famous K-beauty 10-step routine is a maximalist approach to skincare that's more about possibility than necessity. Most people don't do all 10 steps every day. Think of it as a menu, not a daily commitment.

The 10 steps in order:

  1. Oil cleanser. Removes makeup, SPF, sebum, and oil-based impurities.
  2. Water-based cleanser. Removes sweat, dirt, and any residue from the first cleanse.
  3. Exfoliator. Removes dead skin cells. Used 2 to 3 times a week, not daily.
  4. Toner. Hydrates and rebalances skin after cleansing.
  5. Essence. The K-beauty hydration foundation. Watery, lightweight, ingredient-rich.
  6. Serum. Targeted treatment for specific concerns.
  7. Ampoule. More concentrated than a serum. Optional, used for specific concerns.
  8. Eye cream. Hydration and treatment for the delicate undereye area.
  9. Moisturiser. Seals in all the previous steps and locks in hydration.
  10. Sunscreen (morning only) or sleeping mask (evening only). Sun protection or overnight nourishment.

For most people, a 4-step or 5-step routine is plenty. Cleanser, toner, serum, moisturiser, and SPF in the morning, with an oil cleanser added before the water cleanser at night. Add more steps as your skin concerns and curiosity grow.

What is glass skin?

Glass skin is the K-beauty look that's launched a thousand viral TikToks: a complexion so smooth, plump, and luminous it looks like glass catching the light. The defining traits are pores that are barely visible, no dry patches or visible texture, and that signature dewy 'from within' glow.

It's not a filter, a single product, or a trick. It's the result of a deeply hydrated, healthy skin barrier built through consistent layering of lightweight Korean skincare over weeks and months.

The good news: anyone can get there regardless of skin type. The not-so-good news: it takes consistency, not overnight magic. The fastest route is a hydrating toner like ANUA Heartleaf 77%, a moisture-bomb essence or ampoule like SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Ampoule, a layered moisturiser, and SPF every single morning. Stick with it for 4 to 6 weeks and you'll see the difference.

How do I get glass skin?

Glass skin is achievable for most people, but it takes consistency over weeks rather than overnight magic. The look depends entirely on a deeply hydrated, healthy skin barrier.

The fundamentals:

  1. Double cleanse every evening to remove buildup that dulls the skin
  2. Layer hydrating toners and essences. The 7-skin method (7 thin layers of hydrating toner) is the famous K-beauty hack for instant plumpness
  3. Use a hydrating serum and a moisturiser packed with humectants like hyaluronic acid
  4. Add a sleeping mask 2 to 3 nights a week for deeper overnight hydration
  5. Apply SPF every single morning. Sun damage destroys glass skin faster than anything else
  6. Drink water and prioritise sleep. Internal hydration shows on the surface

Avoid: stripping cleansers, alcohol-heavy toners, over-exfoliation, and harsh actives all at once. These break down the very barrier you're trying to build.

The fastest visible route: ANUA Heartleaf 77% Soothing Toner layered 3 times, SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Ampoule, Beauty of Joseon Dynasty Cream sealed with a few drops of facial oil. Stick with it daily for 4 to 6 weeks and you'll see real changes.
