Frequently Asked Questions

What is PDRN?

PDRN stands for Polydeoxyribonucleotide. It's a regenerative ingredient made up of short, biologically active DNA chains that help stimulate skin repair and renewal.

PDRN was originally discovered in regenerative medicine and used to heal wounds. The dermatology and skincare industries now use a version derived from salmon milt (yes, salmon sperm DNA), which closely mimics human DNA and integrates well with human skin cells. Don't let the source put you off, the science is solid and the results speak for themselves.

For people who prefer plant-based options, vegan alternatives derived from green tea, rose, and other botanicals are also used in some formulations.

PDRN has become one of the most-hyped K-beauty ingredients of the last few years, particularly for anti-ageing, post-treatment recovery, and skin barrier repair.

Cult favourites in our community: GENABELLE VITA Toning Ampoule (PDRN combined with vitamin C), and other PDRN-led formulations from our Korean partner brands.

How does PDRN work?

PDRN works at a cellular level to repair and rejuvenate your skin. The TL;DR: it triggers your skin's own healing and collagen-building processes from the inside.

The science (simplified): PDRN's small molecular weight means it can penetrate deep into your skin where it acts as a biological agonist for your A2A adenosine receptors. When it binds to and activates these receptors, three things happen:

  1. Increased angiogenesis (the formation of new blood vessels), which improves oxygen and nutrient delivery to your skin
  2. Stimulated fibroblast activity, which boosts collagen production for firmer skin
  3. Reduced inflammation across the skin's immune response

What this means in practice: smoother fine lines, firmer skin, faster wound and breakout healing, reduced redness, and a more even tone. Because PDRN is so similar to human DNA, it works on almost all skin types, including sensitive and reactive.

PDRN is particularly effective for dull, mature, sensitive, post-procedure, or barrier-compromised skin. Use it as a treatment course (4 to 8 weeks) and you'll see meaningful change. Maintenance use thereafter keeps the benefits.

Can you use PDRN with Retinol?

Yes, PDRN can be safely combined with Retinol in the same skincare routine – in fact, PDRN’s regenerative properties make a natural complement to Retinol’s own ability to stimulate skin cell turnover, especially in anti-ageing skincare regimens. While Retinol’s acceleration of skin’s natural turnover cycle can cause irritation as the topmost layer of skin becomes thinner, PDRN’s soothing, wound-healing properties help to counter this side effect.Β

As always, however, it’s important to introduce both Retinol and PDRN into your skincare routine gradually. Patch-test new products before incorporating them fully into your routine, and make sure to monitor your skin for irritation as you continue use.

When should you use PDRN?

PDRN can be safely applied either as part of your morning routine or your evening routine, although research indicates that evening application may be more effective, given that skin cell regeneration is most active during sleep.Β

You may wish to consider the other ingredients in your PDRN product when deciding when to use it. For example, GENABELLE’s VITA Toning Ampoule also contains capsules infused with Vitamin C, which works synergistically with sunscreen to protect skin from oxidative damage. As such, you may find applying this product during your morning routine is most effectively beneficial for your skin.Β
